Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper singer. Her work as Queen Latifah in film, television and in music has earned numerous awards. They include the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award In addition, she has six Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced around the age of 10 years old. Latifah grew up within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and compassionate in Arabic was given to her by her cousin at the age of she was eight. Latifah is a tall, 5'10" girl who was in the basketball team of her high school squad. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz during a play in her high school. Latifah was a beatboxer in the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King made an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. Then he gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The song got the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who has signed Latifah and, in 1988, released her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
